In the 2025 BPL, the umpire sent out non-striker Mahedi Hasan after Nurul Hasan made a conscious attempt to prevent the bowler from making the catch.
Nurul Hasan attempted to stop bowler Jahandad Khan from making the catch during the BPL 2025 match between Rangpur Riders and Fortune Barishal. The umpire dismissed striker Mahedi Hasan despite the bowler’s pleas for him to be dismissed for blocking the pitch.
Rangpur Riders vs Fortune Barishal BPL Match Overview
There have been many highs and lows in the previous Rangpur Riders vs. Fortune Barishal encounter. Rangpur needed 42 runs in the final three overs, but Shaheen Afridi dismissed Iftikhar Ahmed (48 off 36 balls) and gave up just three runs in the 18th over, leaving them with a two-over target of 39.
Jahandad Khan bowled the next over, and Khushdil Shah (48 off 24 balls) smashed sixes off the first two balls, but the batsman was caught off the very next delivery. At that point, Rangpur needed 27 runs from 9 balls.
Jahandad then threw the ball to right-hander Mahedi Hasan from over the wicket while running left-handed. The ball struck the top edge and traveled towards mid-pitch when Mehidy attempted a cross-batted slap. The batsmen came charging in for a run as Jahandad sprinted to make the catch.
When the captain and non-striker Nurul Hasan spotted the bowler, he veered off course and rushed in the direction of the pitch rather than straight forward. The ball landed in front of Nurul after a little collision between the bowler and the non-striker. Amidst all of this, Jahandad requested a dismissal from the umpire because he was unable to complete the catch.
TV umpire Tanvir Ahmed made the decision after being referred by on-field referees Ali Arman and Asif Yakub. He declared striker Mahedi Hasan out but did not give Nurul Hasan out.
Reason behind Hasan declared out
When Nurul Hasan purposefully attempted to prevent the bowler from making the catch, TV umpire Tanvir Ahmed decided to give Mahedi Hasan out in accordance with cricket rule 37.3.1. When the batsman stops the fielder from catching the ball, this regulation describes the circumstance.
Cricket rule 37.3.1 states that a batsman is out if he stops a fielder from catching the ball and the ball is not a no ball. The striker is out if the batter intentionally blocks or diverts the ball.
Because he was the striker, Mahedi Hasan was ruled out in accordance with this rule. Furthermore, Nurul Hasan was unable to reach the strike on that ball, and that run was also canceled.
Rangpur Riders needed 26 runs from eight balls after this ball. After dismissing Mohammad Saifuddin on the fifth ball after bowling the next ball wide, Jahandad bowled a dot ball to Kamrul Islam Rabbi on the final ball of his over.
To give his team the victory and finish the second-highest run chase in the final over in T20 cricket, captain Nurul Hasan struck a six, four, four, six, six against Kyle Mayers with 26 runs left in the final over.
