In a historic development, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced that it plans to introduce the (WBPL) Women’s Bangladesh Premier League, taking another step in the development of women’s cricket in the country. The WBPL is scheduled to be the first-ever women’s T20 tournament in Bangladesh, and its launch is scheduled after the ongoing BPL season that is due to end in February.

BCB director Nazmul Abedin Fahim made the announcement, stating that the idea of hosting a women’s T20 competition had been under consideration for quite some time. The BCB aims to create a platform to elevate women’s cricket in Bangladesh and inspire more female athletes to take up the sport.
Fahim shared the board’s vision, saying, “We were exploring ways to promote women’s cricket and asked ourselves if organizing a T20 competition for women would be a viable option. After much deliberation, we have now made the decision to organize the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League.”
WBPL is going to be a big milestone for Bangladesh’s cricketing community, as it will provide a professional platform for women cricketers to show their talent.
In the first season of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League, there are three teams set to compete under a double league format. Overall, there would be seven matches, and as such, there would be compact competition but filled with action between players and excitement for the viewers.
Fahim also observed that though it would be on a smaller scale than the male version of the BPL, the event would serve as a very good avenue for local women to get to experience playing together with some of the best the country has produced.
Involvement with WBPL Teams By BCB
In a move to seamlessly integrate the WBPL with the cricketing framework, the BCB has reportedly been in negotiations with several franchises of the BPL, some have evinced keen interest in competing in the newly proposed women’s league. According to Fahim, “We have discussed the issue with some BPL franchises, and a few of them have shown their interest in the women’s league.”.
We want to see how the women’s T20 tournament can complement the men’s T20 cricket and help take our women’s cricket forward.
The participation of established BPL franchises will give credibility and organizational support to the new league, helping it gain traction in its early stages.
Focus on Domestic Talent and Limited Foreign Participation
In an effort to focus on local talent and manage financial constraints, the BCB has decided that each team in the WBPL will be allowed to have only one foreign cricketer. Each team will be allowed to consist of a maximum of 15 players, thus keeping the competition more focused on domestic cricketers.
Fahim explained that the decision was made to reduce the financial burden on the teams, adding, “We cannot afford to have too many foreign players due to financial limitations. Bringing in four foreign players would create financial pressure, and we don’t want to impose that burden on the teams.”
This will give more opportunities to Bangladeshi women cricketers to perform well and provide them with much-needed playing time, along with the opportunity to compete at a higher level.
Women’s Cricket Landscape in Bangladesh
Though WBPL will be a first-of-its-kind event in Bangladesh, it is not the only initiative the BCB has introduced for women’s cricket. The board has already set up an ODI league in Dhaka and recently launched a women’s three-day competition that further strengthens the domestic structure for female cricketers.
The addition of the WBPL to this burgeoning infrastructure is an important step toward providing women cricketers with more competitive opportunities, allowing them to hone their skills and build a professional career in the sport.
The Women’s Bangladesh Premier League launch represents an exciting new chapter for women’s cricket in the country. While it contributes to creating a sustainable and successful women’s cricket ecosystem, the BCB is coming up with several important steps in terms of providing a platform for domestic cricketers to showcase their talents, working with the BPL franchises, and managing foreign players’ participation properly.
The WBPL is to kick-start soon and is likely to grab immense attention and create a buzz as a door opener for the spread of the game in Bangladesh.
