There have been numerous records made and shattered in the history of cricket. However, there are few that remain special. And nothing could be more special to a cricketer than to make records on debut. 

In this article, let us have a look at all the seven batters who scored double hundred on test debut. 

  1. Reginald Erskine Foster – 287 vs Australia, 1903, Sydney

Reginald Foster was the first batter to register maiden innings of 287 runs. This historic feat happened in the first test of Ashes in 1903 in Sydney.  With this record, Foster went down in the history books of cricket as the first cricketer to score double hundred on test debut.  Foster’s magnificent knock in the first innings helped England pile up a massive score of 577. England won the game by five wickets to lead the series 1-0.

  1. Lawrence George Rowe – 214 vs New Zealand, 1972, Kingston 

West Indies batter Lawrence Rowe became the second player to record a double hundred on test debut. The achievement came almost seven decades after the first record. Rowe scored 214 in 1972 at Kingston against New Zealand. The game culminated in a draw with both sides posting massive totals in their first innings.

  1. Brendon Priyantha Kuruppu – 201* vs New Zealand, 1987, Colombo 

Brendon Priyantha Kuruppu is the first and the only Sri Lankan so far to score a double hundred on test debut. He achieved this feat when he scored 201* against New Zealand in 1987 at Colombo. The Lankan opener faced 548 balls and batted for 777 minutes to script history. Brendon’s humongous knock in the first innings saw Sri Lanka post a competitive total of 397. The game concluded in a draw with New Zealand posting 406/5 in their first innings.

  1. Mathew Sinclair – 214 vs West Indies, 1999, Wellington

New Zealand’s Mathew Sinclair made a dream debut in test cricket with a sensational 214 in the first innings at Wellington. He also became the first New Zealand batter to score a double hundred on debut in test cricket.  The feat was achieved in the second test of the West Indies tour of New Zealand in 1999.  New Zealand posted a mammoth first innings score of 518 runs.  West Indies, on the other hand, were bundled out for 179 and 234 in their first and second innings respectively. The Kiwis won the game by an innings and 105 runs and Sinclair was named Player of the Match.

Batters Who Scored Double Hundred On Test Debut

  1. Jacques Rudolph – 222* vs Bangladesh, 2003, Chattogram 

Jacques Rudolph announced himself with a colossal 222* against Bangladesh in 2003 at Chattogram. In the second innings of the match, Rudolph took the charge for South Africa and went on to score a double hundred on test debut. South Africa took the lead of 297 runs, and they later bowled out Bangladesh for 237 to win the game by an innings and 60 runs. The debutant was named Player of the Match.

  1. Kyle Mayers – 210* vs Bangladesh, 2021, Chattogram 

Kyle Mayers became the second West Indies batsman to score a double hundred on his debut in test cricket when he registered an unbeaten knock of 210* in Chattogram in 2021. Chasing a massive total of 395, West Indies got off to a poor start of 59/3. However, Mayers incredible knock helped West Indies win the game by three wickets and he was named Player of the Match.

  1. Devon Conway – 200 vs England, 2021, Lord’s 

The second New Zealand player on the list is Devon Conway. He scored a double hundred on test debut at the Lord’s in the first innings. Despite the debutant’s efforts, New Zealand failed to touch the 400-run mark and the game ended in a draw. Conway was named Player of the Match.
