In the lead-up to Australia’s second match against the West Indies at the Gabba, left-handed batsman Travis Head has tested negative for Covid-19, paving the way for his participation. However, all-rounder Cameron Green and head coach Andrew McDonald are the latest additions to Australia’s squad testing positive for COVID-19.
Head had initially tested positive after the first Test in Adelaide, concluding in three days. Following a subsequent negative test, Head rejoined the squad for training and is now cleared to play in the upcoming Test without restrictions.
Cricket Australia (CA) released a statement confirming the negative results for Travis Head, stating, “Cameron Green and Andrew McDonald, however, have since been diagnosed with Covid and will be separated from the group until they return a negative test.”
Despite testing positive, the CA protocols allow players like Green to participate in the match or McDonald’s to attend, provided they test negative within the next 24 hours. However, Covid-positive players must maintain isolation from the rest of the group during the match.
Australia’s vice-captain, Steve Smith, reassured, “He’s fine. No physical drama at all – just tested positive. He and Andrew McDonald are both fine.”
Having won the first Test at the Adelaide Oval and leading the series 1-0, Australia plans to field an unchanged eleven in the day-night Test at Brisbane with the pink ball.
In a separate development, Sydney Sixers’ captain Moises Henriques, despite testing positive for Covid on Monday, is set to play in the BBL final against Brisbane Heat. Henriques will adhere to COVID-19 protocols, including maintaining separation from the team and limited on-field contact.
The Sydney Sixers released a statement, affirming, “Henriques is in no doubt to take his place in the BBL13 Final.”
