Australia’s U19 Men’s cricket team emerged victorious in the 2024 ICC Men’s Under 19 World Cup, defeating India by 79 runs in the title clash at Willowmoore Park. Captain Hugh Weibgen expressed immense joy and pride in bringing the trophy back home.
Opting to bat first, Australia posted a total of 253/7, with Harjas Singh top-scoring at 55. In response, Australia bowled out India for 174, securing the title with standout performances from Mahli Beardman (3-15) and Raf MacMillan (3-43).
“We are absolutely thrilled to have won the final and to be bringing home the World Cup. We knew this was going to be a tough tournament given the standard of some of the teams, and to go through undefeated says a lot about the talent we have in our squad and the excellence of our planning and preparation,” stated Hugh Weibgen in a Cricket Australia (CA) release.
This victory marks Australia’s fourth U19 Men’s World Cup triumph, the first since 2010. The success aligns with Australia’s recent dominance in ICC events, with the women’s team winning the T20 World Cup, and the senior men’s team claiming the World Test Championship and Men’s ODI World Cup last year.
Nick Hockley, CA CEO, congratulated the team, stating, “To go through the tournament undefeated and bring home the trophy for the first time in 15 years is a wonderful achievement and continues a period of remarkable success for Australian teams on the international stage.”
The statement emphasized the significance of strong pathway programs in Australian Cricket, highlighting the continuous production of talented young cricketers, including those in the victorious U19 team.
