Shubman Gill’s recent form promises well for the Indian cricket team, who will host the ODI World Cup in a few months. On Tuesday, the youthful opener blasted 112 against New Zealand in Indore, his fourth ODI tonne in 21 appearances. He is now averaging 73.76 in the 50-over format. Gill’s 112-run innings in Indore matched Pakistan skipper Babar Azam’s record of scoring the joint-most runs (360) in a three-match ODI series. Gill also has a lot of Test experience.
Shubman was asked to choose between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli in a video interview that aired on Star Sports on Tuesday. Shubman, who is 23 years old, responded.: “I think Virat Bhai because…Sachin sir is the reason why I started playing cricket because my dad was his huge fan. When he retired, I was too young to understand cricket. By the time I started to understand cricket a little more, I would say Virat bhai because I have learnt a lot from him as a batter.”
In the third One-Day International, Rohit Sharma struck his first ODI century in three years, while Shubman Gill continued his blistering run to lead India to 385 for nine. The two put on a ferocious 212-run opening stand, with Rohit (101 off 85 balls) reaching three figures for the first time since January 2020. Gill (112 off 78 balls) scored his fourth ODI century.
On the eve of the match, Rahul Dravid joked that bowlers don’t want to bowl as soon as they arrive in Indore because of the batter-friendly conditions. The batting legend had a valid argument. Even during the chase, New Zealand hitters had a field day, with Devon Conway scoring a century.
