Asia Cup 2023: Gill’s century goes in vain as India lost by 6 runs

Bangladesh got their first victory in the Super Four as they defeated India by 6 runs. Here is a review of the match.

India faced off against Bangladesh in a relatively inconsequential match. It was the final game of the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. Any result wouldn’t have mattered as things stand currently in the tournament. Bangladesh defeated India by 6 runs. Here is the review of the second innings.

Indian batters struggle in powerplay

The Indian batters needed a strong start in the powerplay in order to gain an advantage with the aim of 266 runs in front of them. The exact reverse occurred when debutant Tanzim Hasan removed skipper Rohit Sharma for a silver duck after he had scored three consecutive half-centuries. At number three, Tilak Varma had an underwhelming batting performance. Tanzim dismissed Tilak, who was making his debut. Tilak swung back to castle his stumps after leaving the length delivery on off-side in the expectation that it would be an out-swinger.

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul calmed the ship after it got into trouble early in the powerplay. A 57-run stand was shared by the two. They were scoring at a solid clip before a string of connected dot balls placed KL Rahul under a lot of duress. To relieve some pressure, KL Rahul moved outside for a powerful heave. The wicketkeeper-batsman toe-edged the ball to Shamim Hossain at short mid-wicket because he was unable to read the ball’s pitch. Over the course of his 15-ball tenure at the crease, Ishan Kishan appeared scratchy. Prior to getting struck out by Mehidy Hasan Miraz while playing a switch hit, he could only muster five runs. Shubman reached his half-century and appeared to be holding off the Bangladeshi bowlers amidst all the wickets tumbling.

Suryakumar Yadav was given the ideal chance to demonstrate his talent in one-day international cricket. The master of the T20I format has failed in ODIs, as he has acknowledged publicly. The Indian batsmen were being outplayed by the spinners from Bangladesh. To combat them, Suryakumar chose to use the sweep shot. On numerous occasions, he attempted the sweep shot and missed the ball, but there were also situations when he connected and profited. The sweep shot was ultimately what led to Suryakumar Yadav being fired. Shakib al Hasan bowled him while he was playing a sweep stroke.

India in a spot of bother

India’s loss of the fifth wicket placed them in trouble. They needed 125 runs in 17 overs because they had scored 141 runs in 33 overs. From his batting mates, Shubman required some assistance. At number 7, Ravindra Jadeja entered the room. Early on in the partnership, Shubman adopted an aggressive stance, hitting two sixes in the 36th over. In the next over, Gill scored his 1000th ODI run in 2023. When Mustafizur Rahman joined the assault, he had an immediate impact. Jadeja was dismissed by the left-arm pacer after he attempted a huge heave but absolutely missed the ball. Tanzim was also included in the assault. It was Gill’s fifth ODI century. Gill acted aggressively once more. After hitting a six over deep mid-wicket, Mahedi removed him. When he was out, Gill had scored 121 runs in 133 balls. For the eighth wicket, Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur added 40 runs together. The penultimate over resulted in the dismissal of Axar and Shardul. In just 34 balls, 42 runs were scored by Axar.
