India’s left-arm pacer, Arshdeep Singh, marked a remarkable shift in his ODI performance by claiming his maiden 5-wicket haul in the first ODI against South Africa. His exceptional figures of 5-37, backed by Avesh Khan’s 4-27, orchestrated South Africa’s downfall, leading to India’s commanding victory.
Arshdeep attributed his success to a straightforward game plan, focusing on hitting good areas, extracting bounce, and challenging the Proteas batsmen with difficult deliveries. “Our plan was simple: keep it uncomplicated, target good areas, induce movement, and encourage tough scoring shots,” Arshdeep stated during the post-match conference.
Four of Arshdeep’s crucial wickets came within the initial ten overs, including the dismissals of Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Tony de Zorzi, and Heinrich Klaasen. The unexpected success in the early overs deviated from their initial pre-match strategy.

Reflecting on the match, Arshdeep acknowledged the unexpected turn of events, mentioning a discussion with teammate Avesh Khan about South Africa’s aggressive approach in pink jerseys. However, the discovery of favorable pitch conditions altered their strategy, allowing them to secure early wickets.
Arshdeep, achieving his maiden 5-wicket haul in ODIs, credited his experience from a County stint at Kent this year for enhancing his recovery skills and game understanding. “The County stint helped me understand my game better, maintain fitness, and gain confidence to perform at a higher level,” he expressed.
Arshdeep Singh’s exceptional performance and adaptability, alongside Avesh Khan’s contribution, proved instrumental in India’s comprehensive victory, setting an optimistic tone for the remainder of the ODI series against South Africa.
