Former India captain Anil Kumble criticized Shubman Gill’s recent struggles in Test cricket, suggesting that the right-handed batter has been provided with a cushion that even veteran Cheteshwar Pujara didn’t receive during his time in the national set-up. Kumble pointed out that Gill, despite his talent, needs to work on his game, especially when batting at No. 3 in India.
Gill, who had a strong start to his Test career, has faced challenges after moving to the No. 3 position. Kumble emphasized the importance of Gill working on his skills, adapting to the challenges of spin, and developing a plan to tackle slow and turning pitches. He suggested that Gill should focus on improving his mindset and utilize the expertise of head coach Rahul Dravid to overcome his troubles in Tests.
Kumble also discussed the possibility of including left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in the playing eleven for the second Test, considering the doubtful status of Ravindra Jadeja. While uncertain about the need for a fourth spinner, Kumble acknowledged that having Kuldeep could be beneficial, especially if the conditions favor spin.
In addition, Kumble called for an improved approach from the Indian batters, emphasizing the importance of positive and unconventional plans against spin. He highlighted the need for better footwork and positive intent, addressing concerns about India’s poor showing against England in the first Test in Hyderabad.
