Explained : What is this new ‘Super-4’ qualification stage in Asia Cup 2022?

The newly inducted ‘Super-4’ format of qualification stage in the Asia Cup 2022, is slightly different from the regular semi-final or quarter final matches which usually happen in the ICC tournaments that are conducted in a Round Robin format where the top four teams of the tournament have only one chance to prove their supremacy and contest in the finals of the championship. But in ‘Super-4s’ format, the scenario is going to be different, which is explained below in detail.

 

#1. How does this ‘Super-4s’ qualification criteria work?

 

In this ongoing Asia Cup 2022, six cricket playing nations of Asian continent are divided into two groups, consisting of three teams in each group. The group A of the league inducted India, Pakistan and Hong Kong, while the group B consisted of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. So the top two teams from each group will compete against each other in six matches of this ‘Super-4s’ stage, where the two victorious teams from it will directly appear in the grand finale of Asia Cup 2022.

#2. What is the advantage of the ‘Super-4s’ qualification stage?

The biggest advantage of this format is that all the teams which will compete against each other will get a fair amount of chances to prove their paramountcy for the trophy, instead of the plane semi final or quarter final scenarios where every team has only one chance or one match to appear for the finals of the tournament.
