The two superstar cricketers of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are absolutely flamboyant and top notch when it comes to match the standards of extraordinary batting. Virat Kohli was the captain of Indian cricket team in all three formats in the time span of 2015-2021, while after he stepped down from the leadership, Rohit Sharma became the new three format leader of the side. But there are few key differences between the approach of these two players when it comes to lead the highly wizard international cricket team like India.
Although the ultimate goal of both the models of leadership is the same i.e which is to achieve the victory for the team. But still given below are the three prime differences in the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
#1. Kohli’s tiltedness towards Nippy Pace bowlers.
Virat Kohli always prefers pace and seam bowling over the slow-swing bowling attack that manifests his aggressive nature which also reflects in his selection of the horses for the courses. The inclusion of speedsters like Jasprit bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav are the perfect examples of why Kohli used to go with rapidos along with discipline bowling.
But Rohit Sharma seem to be prefer swing bowling more, as the cherry picking of bowlers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshadeep Singh and Shardul Thakur proves the point decently.
#2. Rohit’s selection criteria based on IPL performance.
One thing is totally sure in the seven months of captaincy period which Rohit Sharma has lived in, that he used to prefer the candidate for the Indian team mostly based on their performances in the IPL. Virat Kohli is slightly rigid in this context as he believed more in grooming the player based on their hidden potential, which caused hardship sometimes to him in the cases of Khaleel Ahmed and Jayant Yadav.
While the context of Mohammed Siraj is slightly different as he really paid off after Kohli brought him in the International Circuit, but this is one of the major differences which seem to be reflected in the captaincy of both the superstars.
#3. Sky-high Fielding standards of captain Kohli.
During the whole leadership era of MS Dhoni the fielding was a great concern which actually resulted in the ruled out of few veteran players like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir from the Indian cricket team, but when Virat Kohli took over the baton from Dhoni his one of the prime focus was making India the best fielding team of the world.
The gun fielders which can be seen right now is the direct outcome of the approach and hard work put by Virat Kohli in the background work but on the other hand Rohit Sharma seems to be casual like Dhoni in the aspect of fielding. It’s not the case that he wanted the Indian team to be a poor fielding side of the world but this objective is probably not included in its prime list of improving areas.
