Ajit Wadekar was a cricketer for the Indian national team from 1966 to 1974. He was one of the few cricketers to serve as team manager, captain, coach and chairman of selectors for the Indian team. His success in the role of Captain led to widespread recognition. He contributed to the success of the team on varied occasions and was often seen as a role model for the other cricketers. Ajit Wadekar has devoted himself to the Indian Cricket team and that is the primary reason that he keeps taking different roles in the BCCI to prove himself valuable and contribute as much as possible. 

Wadekar, despite his slight build, had a powerful bat. He developed a technique that was uniquely his, such as batting with his feet spread apart. His First-Class career lasted for 17 years, beginning when he was 47 years old, and he scored 15,380 runs. He had a career-high batting average of 59, with 4,388 runs scored, all in the Ranji Trophy. During the historic run Bombay made in the 1960s; he was the anchor for the squad. He slipped and lost his wicket in the semi-final match of the 1972–1973 season, which resulted in him being run out.

  • Wadekar inspired young, less-experienced players to beat the mighty West Indies team, which included legends like Sir Garfield Sobers, Clive Lloyd, and Roy Fredricks. The result was an almost unreal win. It is considered one of India’s best wins on another country’s land.
