Former Indian cricketer Abhinav Mukund expressed optimism about Meg Lanning’s return in the right mindset for the Delhi Capitals in the upcoming 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL). Meg Lanning, the five-time World Cup-winning captain for Australia, was the leading run-scorer in the previous season, amassing 345 runs.
Lanning had announced her retirement from international cricket last year but continued to play for Melbourne Stars in the WBBL. Mukund, who hopes for Lanning’s return in the right mind-space, highlighted Delhi Capitals’ strong lineup, including promising Indian players Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues, international cricketer Meg Lanning, and new addition Annabel Sutherland.
“Delhi Capitals are a solid team. They have got two of the most promising young Indian players in Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues and also arguably the best international cricketer in Meg Lanning,” said Mukund on JioCinema. He emphasized the team’s strength, mentioning Marizanne Kapp, Alice Capsey, and the addition of Annabel Sutherland.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Saba Karim also sees Delhi Capitals as stronger contenders this year. “DC is a stronger team this time. They generally look for balance on their side. But this time, they entered into a bidding war for Annabel Sutherland and have a clear strategy in place,” said Karim. He highlighted the team’s strategic approach and noted that they will be strong contenders.
Delhi Capitals, having reached the final last year and finishing as runners-up, aim for redemption in the 2024 Women’s Premier League. They will open their campaign against defending champions Mumbai Indians on February 23, setting the stage for a re-match of the WPL 2023 final.
