Legendary South African batter AB de Villiers has emphasized the significance of posting substantial scores to secure victories for South Africa in the upcoming Men’s ODI World Cup, particularly in light of the team’s recent challenges with its bowling lineup.
South Africa enters the tournament following a 3-2 series win over Australia at home, although they faced setbacks with injuries to pacers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala before their arrival in India.
The Proteas, who are yet to claim the prestigious Men’s ODI World Cup trophy, will commence their World Cup campaign against 1996 champions Sri Lanka at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 7.
De Villiers expressed his expectations for the South African batting lineup, stating, “With the bat in hand, I believe Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma can establish a solid foundation, supported by Klaasen, Markram, and Miller – explosive batters with extensive IPL experience. They can contribute to controlling the innings. For South Africa, achieving big scores is imperative.”
“I think we need to consistently score above 300 to have a chance because our bowling attack has encountered challenges. Hopefully, Rabada and company can find solutions and pick up early wickets, allowing Maharaj and Shamsi to create disruptions during the middle overs, making it difficult for the opposing batting side,” added de Villiers during a discussion on JioCinema’s daily show ‘#AAKASHVANI.’
De Villiers further assessed the strengths and weaknesses of the Proteas, highlighting their aggressive and competitive cricketing nature as a strength. He mentioned that South Africa’s ability to apply pressure on the opposition while fielding sets them apart.
However, he acknowledged that South Africa’s major weakness lies in their lack of consistent victories in recent years and their absence from the top rankings. De Villiers expressed concerns about the team’s bowling performance during the initial ten overs, emphasizing the importance of Kagiso Rabada and others finding their rhythm for the World Cup.
De Villiers concluded with optimism, expressing his belief that South Africa can go far in the tournament and even lift the trophy. He anticipates a critical match in the quarterfinals or semifinals, which, if won, could provide the team with the momentum to clinch the World Cup.
“I foresee South Africa winning this World Cup. I understand that India is the favorite, and it won’t be easy, with several other teams playing well. I believe the semi-finals will be the deciding factor. If we succeed there, I see South Africa lifting the World Cup in 2023.”
