Former India opener Aakash Chopra has voiced criticism against the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for its decision to withhold No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and delay annual central contracts for players Naveen-ul Haq, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Fazalhaq Farooqi. The ACB took this disciplinary measure after the players requested to be released from their annual central contracts.

Aakash Chopra expressed his disapproval, highlighting that these players have gained prominence due to their participation in various T20 leagues around the world. He argued that the decision to deny NOCs for two years is counterproductive and contradicts the idea of protecting players’ interests.

“The players have already said that they make their living outside Afghanistan. They are being told to prioritize the country’s interests. But if their interests are not protected, if they are not allowed to make a living, then what are they supposed to do?” questioned Chopra on JioCinema’s sports show ‘#AAKASHVANI’.

The former cricketer emphasized that the players have become noteworthy not solely because of the Afghanistan Cricket Board but also due to their active participation in franchise cricket across different countries. He criticized the decision to deprive them of NOCs, stating that it restricts their opportunities and goes against their livelihood.

Moreover, Chopra pointed out the potential challenges for IPL franchises, including Lucknow Super Giants, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kolkata Knight Riders, who retained or acquired these players. The decision raises concerns about the players’ availability for IPL 2024 and poses challenges for the franchises in finding suitable replacements at the last minute.

While acknowledging the current complexity of the situation, Chopra hinted that there might be more developments or a twist in the story regarding ACB’s decision.
