On Tuesday, April 18, Rohit Sharma became the fourth batter in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to score 6000 runs. The right-handed hitter accomplished the feat during a match between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
Rohit needed 14 runs to reach the milestone, which he did when the Mumbai-based team was given the opportunity to bat first after winning the toss. In his 227th IPL innings, he also became the slowest batsman to achieve the mark.
The right-handed hitter began his innings with a single before hitting Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a four through the covers. Following that, Rohit swept Washington Sundar for a four in the fine leg to square leg range.
With a pull shot for a four against Sundar, the veteran achieved 6000 IPL runs. In the third over of MI’s innings, Rohit churned out a vicious cut shot to record a hat-trick of fours. Rohit scored 28 runs off 18 balls before being caught by T Natarajan in the fifth over.
Over the last three seasons, Sharma has battled for runs in the IPL. He recently struck his first half-century in the IPL in nearly two years. Rohit scored a fifty against the Capitals, which was his first IPL fifty after 24 games.
Rohit is still remembered fondly by the Mumbai-based franchise. From 2013 to 2020, Rohit guided MI to five IPL victories, making them the most successful club in T20 league history.
After passing the 6000-run barrier, Rohit joined a select group of batters. The other hitters in the elite group are Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) Virat Kohli, Delhi Capitals’ (DC) David Warner, and Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) Shikhar Dhawan.
