Virat Kohli, one of the best batters in contemporary cricket, has had an unusual ride in the Indian Premier League. With his exceptional batting and commanding leadership, he has guided Royal Challengers Bangalore to several resounding triumphs.
RCB have never won an IPL crown since the tournament’s debut in 2008, but they still have a large fan base, and Virat is surely a big reason for that.
Virat Kohli had numerous great knocks in the world-renowned T20 tournament. Let’s take a look at Virat Kohli’s top 5 IPL innings.
113 vs KXIP (2016)
This RCB versus KXIP match in Bengaluru was trimmed to 15 overs a side owing to rain. With a hand injury, Kohli batted first and smacked the KXIP bowlers out of the park. Kohli struck 113 off 50 balls with 12 fours and eight sixes for an SR of 226. His fourth century of the season. The RCB scored 211/3 and won by 82 runs (D/L).
109 vs GL (2016)
This match vs GL featured two all-time greats in their peak. Kohli and de Villiers were all over the GL bowlers as they batted first. Kohli finished with 109 runs off 55 balls, 5 fours, and 8 sixes, with a strike rate of 198.18. RCB won the game by 144 runs after scoring a massive 248-3.
108* vs RPS (2016)
At the M.Chinnaswamy stadium, RCB faced RPS. RPS batted first and scored 191 to pose a strong test in favourable batting conditions. They did not, however, calculate for a Virat storm. Kohli took on every RPS bowler and went on to knock 108* off 58 balls with 8 fours and 7 sixes at a strike rate of 186.21, leading RCB to a 7-wicket victory.
100* vs GL (2016)
Virat seems to have a soft spot for the Gujarat Lions. He scored two centuries against the squad that is no longer in existence. The first was at Rajkot, when Virat responded to the occasion by slamming the GL bowling on a batting heaven. Kohli hit 100* runs off 63 balls, including 11 boundaries and a six. Nevertheless, Kohli’s century was in naught as Gujarat triumphed by 6 wickets.
100 vs KKR (2019)
In 2019 Kohli hammered his 5th overall IPL century against the Knight Riders in their own den. Kohli batted well against Narine, Kuldeep, and Russell, scoring 100 off 58 balls with 9 fours and 4 sixes for an SR of 172.41. When Nitish Rana and Andre Russell tried to steal victory from the jaws of defeat, RCB batted 213/4 and prevailed by a tight margin of 10 runs. Virat also took 2 catches in that match.
99 vs DD (2013)
In 2013, Kohli barely missed out on a century against DD at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. He scored 99 runs on 58 balls. The knock had an SR of 170.69 and contained 10 fours and 4 sixes. The RCB captain deserved a hundred, but was run out off the penultimate ball while trying a run that would have taken him to his maiden three-figure IPL score. RCB scored 183/4 and won by 4 runs.
This was one of Kohli’s best knocks after becoming a captain in the IPL. It was Kohli’s first season as skipper of RCB and he played a gem of a knock of 93* runs off 47 balls with 11 fours and 4 sixes against SRH in 2013. RCB chased down the target of 162 comfortably, winning the match by 7 wickets. Virat was adjudged Man of the match.
92* vs MI (2018)
This innings of 92* will be regarded as a valiant effort by King Kohli in the 2018 IPL. RCB struggled with the bat when chasing a massive goal of 214 versus MI, owing primarily to Rohit Sharma’s 52-ball 94. Kohli, on the other hand, remained composed. Nevertheless, despite remaining undefeated on 92, Virat could not lead RCB home, as MI triumphed by 46 runs. Kohli’s innings featured seven boundaries and four sixes.
90* vs CSK (2020)
Kohli had not have a stellar year in 2020 by his own high standards. Kohli had one of his finest innings under duress in this game against CSK. Kolhi scored 90* off 52 balls at an SR of 173.08 for RCB, bringing their total to 169/4. RCB won the game by 37 runs, and Kohli was named Man of the Match. His innings had four fours and four sixes.
82* vs MI (2023)
The IPL returned to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, and the hosts won convincingly (RCB). Chasing a goal of 171, Kohli opened the innings with a bang. He took up the lengths early, hammered the bowlers out of the park, and stayed till the job was done for RCB. Kohli hit 82* runs off 49 deliveries for an SR of 167.35, with four fours and five maximums.
