What is Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)?

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket association constituting of seven teams. It is organised by BPL governing council and is one of three professional cricket tournaments in Bangladesh. It is the world’s 16th most-attended professional league. Each team counter the other team twice in the winter league. Following the judgement of regular season, the top four teams proceed for the playoffs. This consists of a single-elimination round and two qualifier rounds, concluding in the Championship game between the contestants of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.

BPL was established in 2011 by Bangladesh Cricket Board, just after the layoff of its predecessor organization, the 2009/10 National Cricket League Twenty20. The foremost season started in February 2012 and games were hosted in Dhaka and Chittagong. BPL is lead by chairman of the BPL’s Governing Council.

2020 edition of the BPL was to be held by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) without franchise participation. The resolution came up after mutual consent between BCB and franchise owners. It was during this meeting that the BCB failed to fulfil the claims of various franchise owners. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, BCB declared in October 2020 that there will be no further tournaments in 2020.

 Carlos Brathwaite

Carlos Ricardo Brathwaite is a former West Indies Twenty20 International cricket captain belonging to Barbados. Brathwaite got his first West Indies T20I entry against Bangladesh on October 11, 2011 and just seven days later, he made his One Day International breakthrough in the same series. He became the first West Indian player to bang four straight sixes in a T20I match. For their Twenty20 International games with India in Florida, Brathwaite was appointed as captain of the West Indies team. Also, he was appointed in the West Indies squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

Luke Ronchi

Luke Ronchi represented both the Australian and New Zealand national cricket teams being New Zealand-Australian cricket coach and a former cricketer. Ronchi is the very first player in cricket history to have represented both Australia and New Zealand in international cricket. He has also been a part of the New Zealand World Cup team that has been runners-up in the 2015 Cricket World Cup after losing to Australia in the final. He has taken part in Twenty20 matches various times and has played for Wellington in New Zealand domestic competitions. In June 2017, he retired from international cricket.

AB de Villiers

International player Abraham Benjamin de Villiers is a former South African cricketer. Not only, he was honoured with title of ICC One-Day International Player of the Year thrice in his 15-year career but also became one of the five Wisden cricketers of the decennium in 2019. Though the said player has started his global level career as a wicket-keeper-batsman but has mostly played as a batsman. He batted mainly in the middle batting order. In 2004, he had his international debut against England in a Test series, in 2005, he played his first One Day International (ODI) and in 2006, he made his Twenty20 International debut.

De Villiers lead South Africa in all three formats, but he quit from the post of Test captain after having injuries. He stood down as captain of the national limited-overs team in 2017 and from all forms of global cricket in May 2018. 

He is regarded as one of the excellent cricketers in history and outstanding batsman of his time. De Villiers is acclaimed for various eccentric strokes, predominantly at the back of the wicketkeeper, and is renowned as one of the most progressive batters of his era.

 Alex Hales

Alexander Daniel Hales (born 3 January 1989) is a cricketer belonging to England. He is a right-handed opening batsman representing Nottinghamshire and the England cricket team in white ball and limited-over formats. In August 2014, he made his One Day International debut against India. Also, he scored his Test debut against South Africa in 2015. Hales is the first English batsman to gain a century in a T20I. He is the first batsman to get dispersed out for 99 runs in T20I and ODI.

 Avishka Fernando

Weerahandige Avishka Fernando is a professional Sri Lankan cricket player who competes in limited-over internationals for the Sri Lanka national team. He participated in Colts Cricket Club in domestic cricket. He has made his international entrance August 2016 for the Sri Lanka cricket team.
