The Ireland cricket team, representing the nation in the world of international cricket, is managed by the Irish Cricket Union under the brand of Cricket Ireland. In 1993, the team was granted Associate membership by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Ireland made its debut in One Day International (ODI) cricket in 2006 against England as part of its preparation for the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup.
During the tournament, the team’s exceptional performance against Full Members of the ICC cemented their successful qualification, including a remarkable draw against Zimbabwe and triumphs against top-ranked teams Pakistan and Bangladesh. Since then, the Ireland cricket team has played 176 ODIs, boasting 74 victories, 89 defeats, ten matches with no result, and 3 ties. In 2009, the group became professional with the introduction of player contracts, marking a milestone in its history.
Current One-Day International Status:
In 2007, the Ireland cricket team made its debut in the Cricket World Cup and created a buzz with its stunning performances. They recorded a tie with Zimbabwe and emerged victorious against the fourth-ranked team, Pakistan. Although they made it to the Super 8 stage, they faced losses against England, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and Sri Lanka. However, they finished on a high note by defeating Bangladesh. After the World Cup, former West Indies cricketer Phil Simmons took over as the coach, and the team went on to win the 2007-08 ICC Intercontinental Cup.
In 2009, Ireland played host to the European Cricket Championship (Division One) and took home their third championship title. The team qualified for the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in England and made a strong start with a win over Bangladesh. As a result, they progressed to the second stage, proving their competitiveness in the international arena. In 2010, the Ireland cricket team played 17 One Day Internationals, emerging victorious in 11 matches and losing in 6.
Despite their long history of top-notch international cricket, Ireland achieved full ICC membership in June 2017. This honoured status solidified their position as the eleventh Test cricket team. In 2017, the ICC announced that Ireland’s first Test match would be against Pakistan in May 2018. In March of 2019, Ireland played their first Test match as a touring team against Afghanistan in India, where they, unfortunately, lost by seven wickets. However, they later played another Test match against England at Lord’s in July 2019.
Current Status of Test Cricket in Ireland:
In 2012, Warren Deutrom, the CEO of Cricket Ireland, declared a bold vision for the future of Irish cricket. He announced a plan to elevate the team to play Test cricket by 2020 to retain talented Irish players leaving to play for England. The program for Irish cricket was centered around growing the sport’s participation, improving rankings, establishing a top-notch cricket structure, and making it the fifth most popular team sport in the country.
After a decade of playing international cricket, Ireland’s hard work and dedication finally paid off when they were granted full ICC membership in 2017. They debuted in Test cricket the following year, facing off against Pakistan. In October 2019, Andrew Balbirnie was named the new Test and ODI captain, and in November, he took over the T20I captaincy. Finally, in January of 2022, Ireland made history with their first away ODI series win against the West Indies.
