India vs Australia test series: Ravichandran Ashwin surpasses Anil Kumble to break a major test record

Ravichandran Ashwin became the second Indian bowler to reach a major milestone.

On Day 1 of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy match between India and Australia in Nagpur on Thursday, Ravichandran Ashwin became the fastest Indian bowler to 450 Test wickets. Anil Kumble set the record with 93 wickets in 93 matches, but Ashwin collected 450 wickets in 89 matches. Overall, he was the second fastest bowler in the world, trailing only legendary Sri Lankan bowler Muttiah Muralitharan (80). When it comes to the number of balls required to take 450 Test wickets, Ashwin was once again second with 23635 deliveries, while Australia’s Glenn McGrath was top with 23474.

RaviAshwin took his 450th wicket when he dismissed Alex Carey for 36.

Ravindra Jadeja’s 11th five-wicket haul helped India dismiss Australia for 177 in their first innings just after tea on day one of the first Test here on Thursday.

During the second session, the left-arm spinner, who had recovered from a knee injury, was the wrecker-in-chief, breaking the 82-run stand between Steve Smith (37) and Marnus Labuschagne (49) before trapping Matt Renshaw and Todd Murphy.

In the third session of the day, Jadeja (5/47) trapped Peter Handscomb (31) as Australia were all out in 63.5 overs.

Alex Carrey batted for 33 balls before being dismissed by experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (3/42), India’s other wicket-taker in the second session.

Earlier, pacers Mohammed Shami (1/18) and Mohammed Siraj (1/30) delivered the visitors an early punch, dismissing openers Usman Khwaja (1) and David Warner (1) within the opening three overs.
