Veteran India opener Murali Vijay on Monday announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.

Veteran India opener Murali Vijay on Monday announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket to explore “new prospects in the world of cricket and the business side of it”. He last appeared for India in the Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia in December 2018.

Murali played 61 Tests, 17 One-Day Internationals, and nine Twenty20 Internationals for India during his international career, which began in 2008 when he replaced Gautam Gambhir in the playing XI in the last Border-Gavaskar Test series against Australia in Nagpur. He amassed 3982 runs in Tests, including 12 hundreds and 15 fifties, 339 runs in ODIs, including a single half-century, and 169 runs in T20Is.

He tweeted, “Today, with immense gratitude & humility, I announce my retirement from all forms of International cricket. My journey from 2002-2018 has been the most wonderful years of my life for it was was an honour representing India at the highest level of sport. I am grateful for the opportunities given to me by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), Chennai Super Kings and Chemplast Sanmar.”

He also represented Tamil Nadu in 135 first-class and 94 List A cricket matches before retiring in late 2019. Murali also played in 106 IPL games, amassing 2619 runs with two tonnes and 13 fifties before retiring in September 2020.
