Sarfaraz Khan smashed another century in the Ranji Trophy just days after being overlooked for the Test series against Australia. It’s his 13th century in First-Class cricket in just 37 games, and the 25-year-old is on a roll.
Sarfaraz has been enjoying a golden run in domestic cricket since 2020. But, while it put him on the radar of selectors, it didn’t get him a spot on the Test team.
It was the same old story as he was turned down for someone else. Suryakumar Yadav was chosen over Sarfaraz based on his T20I performances.
The irony is that Sarfaraz performed well in Ranji, the standard for Test selection. Nonetheless, he was defeated by someone for an entirely unrelated reason. Sarfaraz, with all due respect to Suryakumar, would believe he was dealt a poor hand.
The batter’s most recent performance was so impressive that coach Amol Muzumdar doffed his hat from the stands.
Venkatesh Prasad, a former India pacer, came out in support of the young man.
“Not having him in the Test Team despite 3 blockbuster domestic seasons is not only unfair on Sarfaraz Khan, but it’s an abuse to domestic cricket, almost as if this platform doesn’t matter,” wrote Prasad on Twitter.
“And he is FIT to score those runs. As far as body weight goes, there are many with more kgs,” the tweet also said.
Sarfaraz entered the domestic scene as a promising adolescent, but in the last several years, his game has reached a whole new level.
It’s a shame he’s not on the Test team. One can only hope that his big break comes soon. Better late than never, as they say, and Sarfaraz will want to keep doing well in order to see that opportunity sooner rather than later.
