Let’s look at the top four batsmen in one bilateral ODI series in terms of runs scored. On the list are two submissions from 2018—one of them very recent—and two Indians. We will display them, starting with the least appealing items and advancing up the list in increasing order. To their credit, not many batters have done that thus far since it is almost impossible.
1.Hamilton Masakadza (5 games, 467 runs)
When you have to play five one-day international matches in a span of six matches—500 cricket overs—the conditions are never too easy. Zimbabwe and Kenya played a five-match One-Day International series from October 12 to October 18, 2009. Hamilton Masakadza didn’t seem to be dealing with any such concerns. Zimbabwe ultimately prevailed against their opponents 4 to 1.
In the first game, Masakadza scored 156 runs off 151 balls as Zimbabwe amassed 313/4 in 50 overs. But for a later run-out, he might have proceeded to score points. The remarkable innings, which contributed to Zimbabwe’s 91-run victory, included 11 fours and 6 sixes. Additionally selected game MVP was Masakadza.
In the second game, which Zimbabwe won by 86 runs, he helped himself to 91 balls and 66 runs. In the third ODI, he was handed the job of chasing and completed with a 42-ball-44. Later, Zimbabwe was outscored by 20 runs as Kenya won the series. Masakadza only managed to score 23 points in the fourth game off of 29 balls, but Zimbabwe still defeated Kenya this time.
2.George Bailey (6 matches, 478 runs)
Perhaps the biggest run fest of 2013 took place during the bilateral series between Australia and India. A series that was the stuff of any team’s bowlers’ nightmares saw the setting and breaking of several batting records.
There were 300 or more runs in nine out of the eleven complete innings, and 350 or more runs in five of them. We also watched the videos of a few of fierce knocks and some lightning-fast chases.
In Australia’s first victory in the series, Bailey outscored the opposition 85 to 82 to win man of the match. The next innings saw him reach 50 balls and 92 not out, but his team couldn’t repeat its victory.
In the third One Day International, he accumulated a 60-ball-43, which ultimately helped Australia win the game. When he was out for 92 balls and 98 runs in the fourth game, he was denied a well-deserved hundred. The subsequent rain caused the game to conclude in a tie.
He finally reached the three-figure mark in the sixth game, scoring 156 off 114 balls, including 13 fours and 6 sixes, but India won the game and the series was once again tied. The fifth match was given up.
3.Rohit Sharma (6 matches, 491 runs)
The other batsman from the 2013 India-Australia series, Rohit Sharma, outperformed George Bailey, finishing with 13 more runs than him. The series’ high point was the batsman’s first-ever ODI double-century, which he made in the final game and without which he would have only scored 282 runs throughout the series (which is not too bad, by the way).
Rohit Sharma helped India lose the first game with a 47-ball, 42-run first inning. He led the team to victory in the second game, tying the series, and was named the game’s best player with a stunning 123-ball-141 that had 17 fours and 4 sixes. He made little of an impact in the following game, scoring just 11 goals out of 22 as Australia took back the lead.
When rain started to fall in the fourth game, the batch had to be called off with him batting at 9 off 13 runs. He made a comeback in the sixth game, scoring 79 off 89 balls as Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli both put up enormous performances to make the score 2 – 2, without bowling a ball, the fifth game was abandoned.
4.Fakhar Zaman (5 matches, 515 runs)
The most recent addition to the list, Fakhar Zaman, has recently transformed Pakistan cricket. The newest of these successes dates back to June 2017, when he made a single contribution to Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy victory against India by bowling a single knock.
In his 19th innings, Fakhar broke the record for the quickest hitter to accumulate 1000 runs in ODIs, earning him renown. During Pakistan’s recent 5-0 thrashing of Zimbabwe, he also passed Zimbabwe’s run total, making him the second-highest run scorer in a bilateral series.
