The Indian Premier League (IPL) has always highlighted batting brilliance with the Orange Cap, given each season to the player who scores the most runs. It’s often seen as a mark of consistency, dominance, and the ability to perform across an entire tournament. But interestingly, not every IPL great has had this title to their name. A number of legendary players have built outstanding careers and played key roles in their teams’ success. But a few legends were not able to win the Orange Cap in their entire career.
Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma remains one of the defining personalities in IPL history, admired more for his calm leadership and reliability than for topping the scoring charts in a single season. As Mumbai Indians’ captain, he has guided the franchise to five championship wins, yet the Orange Cap has never come his way. With over 7,000 runs to his name, Rohit has often played the role of an anchor, focusing on building innings and reading match situations rather than chasing big individual tallies in a season. But he never won an Orange cap in his career.
Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan has built a reputation as one of the most dependable top-order batters the IPL has seen, delivering steady performances for franchises like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings. With close to 7,000 runs in the league, he has regularly featured among the leading run-getters, especially during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Even so, finishing as the tournament’s highest scorer in a single edition has remained just out of reach.
Suresh Raina
Suresh Raina, often called “Mr. IPL,” was the heartbeat of Chennai Super Kings for more than a decade. Known for his fluent stroke play and consistency under pressure, he delivered season after season and played a major part in the team’s success. With over 5,500 runs, Raina was one of the league’s early standout performers, yet the Orange Cap never came his way. His closest opportunity arrived in 2013 when he scored 548 runs, but it wasn’t enough to top the charts. reflecting a career built on sustained impact rather than one standout, record-breaking season.
Ab de Villiers
Ab de Villiers is one of the most destructive batsmen ever in Indian Premier league history, He has played countless matchwinning knocks for his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. Despite scoring more than 5000 runs in Indian premier league history, ABD has scored 687 runs in IPL season 2106, where RCB lost the titles against SRH. But, he was not able to win an Orange cap ever in his tenure.
