India defended their T20 World Cup title by getting the better of New Zealand in the final of the 2026 edition played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Men in Blue were clinical in all three departments of the game and outplayed the opponent by a margin of 96 runs.
The Start
Put in to bat first by New Zealand, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side got off to a rollicking start with Abhishek Sharma scoring the second-fastest half-century for India in the history of the tournament after being out of form during the entire tournament. The left-hander was well supported by Sanju Samson, who continued his good form by scoring his third century on the trot.
The Partnership
The duo added 98 runs in 43 balls for the first wicket, and the good work done by them was carried forward by Ishan Kishan, who also scored a quick-fire half-century while batting at number three and took the score past the 200-run mark along with Samson
The Comeback
New Zealand struck back when India was on course to score close to 300 runs as James Neesham took three wickets in an over to shift the momentum in his team’s favour. However, Dube, courtesy of his six-hitting abilities, helped India finish on a high by scoring 26 runs off just 8 balls as India posted a humongous total of 255 runs on the board.

The Kiwi batter were not able to cope against Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled a match-winning spell of 4/15 and ended up getting the player of the match award, resulting in a heavy defeat for New Zealand.
Wickets of the Top Order Batters
New Zealand batters were not able to stitch a partnership and kept on losing their wickets in a bid to keep therun rate up.
India’s Aggressive Approach while Batting
Indian batters had the idea of how they were going to approach the innings right from the first ball, which caught the opposition bowlers off guard as they had to quickly switch to plan B, which did not work at least in the first 15 overs and took the game away from them.
