The Rajasthan Royals have officially declared Kumar Sangakkara as the head coach and director of cricket for the IPL 2026 season. The update of the title is formal, but Sangakkara had actually shoulder both responsibilities in the IPL 2025 after the franchise parted ways with their former coach Rahul Dravid.
Kumar Sangakkara: A Proven Leader Returns

The support staff has also had a strategic reshuffle:
Vikram Rathour, who was previously batting coach, becomes the new assistant coach.
Shane Bond continues as the bowling coach.
Trevor Penney remains assistant coach.
Sid Lahiri remains the performance coach.
An excited Sangakkara said on his return that the strong and experienced coaching team will help the squad prepare with a clear, resilient, and purposeful mindset.
New Captaincy Era Begins
Rajasthan Royals will also be bringing in a new captain, since they traded Sanju Samson to the Chennai Super Kings. Rajasthan Royals acquired Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran in this trade, which really beefs up their all-around options.
