After the withdrawal of India’s Bangladesh white-ball tour, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially approached the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to look into a truncated bilateral series in August. The suggested tour consists of three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is), equivalent to the originally planned Bangladesh tour between August 17 and 31.
BCCI Still to Finalize, Asia Cup Decision is Crucial

Though BCCI is yet to approve, it has recognized the pending application of Sri Lanka. But for now, the Indian board is considering the scenario, especially considering the Asia Cup 2025, which may clash or affect schedules and player participation.
“A pending request from SLC, we haven’t made any decision yet. Everything is connected with the Asia Cup,” a top BCCI official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Possible Return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in ODIs

If the series is sanctioned, it may witness the return of Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are currently playing only in ODIs. Both have walked away from Tests and T20Is but are still crucial to India’s ODI team.
Their inclusion in the possible Sri Lanka vs India ODI series would hugely increase viewing and fan interest.
BCCI to Seek Advice of Chief Stakeholders in London

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia will reportedly talk to the Indian team management and players about the planned Sri Lanka tour when they play the Lord’s Test in London. Recommendations will be sought from head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and veteran players before a final call is made.
Asia Cup Decision Expected Within Days
The fate of the Asia Cup 2025, to be held between September 10-28, is likely to be determined within 2-3 days. BCCI would make a decision based on feedback from the Government of India, particularly in light of geopolitical sensitivity regarding Pakistan, an important participant and stakeholder in the event. Being the host board, BCCI has the final say over the viability and timing of the tournament.
India’s tour of Bangladesh having been put on hold, Sri Lanka’s application to the BCCI for an August white-ball series becomes a viable option for high-intensity cricket before the Asia Cup. It is now in the hands of the BCCI, subject to consultations and government clearances. If cleared, Indian cricket enthusiasts could now see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli take the field once again in ODI cricket in Sri Lanka.
