Records Shubman Gill Can Break vs England In Current Test Series

Shubman Gill has stormed the cricketing world in the current five-match Test series against England. In his first Test series captaincy for India, Gill has already contributed 585 runs in merely two matches with an average of 146.25.

Three centuries, including a dazzling double hundred, have set him up to break some of the most legendary records in Test cricket, including quite a few longstanding records by Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar.

Records Shubman Gill can shatter in the next three Tests

  1. Most Runs in a Test Series as Captain

Shubman Gill is approaching Don Bradman’s 810 run record in the 1936-37 Ashes, the highest runs by a captain in a series. Bradman’s list consisted of three centuries and a best of 270. Incidentally, that series was Bradman’s first time captaining, the same as Gill’s.

 Gill Needs: 225 runs

  Current tally: 585 runs

 Record: Bradman – 810 runs (1936-37 Ashes)

If Gill crosses this score, he won’t just shatter Bradman’s record but also create a fresh benchmark for most runs by an Indian captain in a debut Test series.

  1. Most Runs in a Series by an Indian Captain

Another record in the sight of Shubman Gill is the most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series, which is held by Sunil Gavaskar, who accumulated 732 runs in six matches against the West Indies in 1978-79.

 Gill Needs: 148 more runs

  Record: Gavaskar – 732 runs

With three more games to play, this record also seems very much within Gill’s reach, as he is currently in form.

  1. Most Runs in a Test Series (Overall)

The great Don Bradman also shares the record for most runs in a Test series, 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes.

 Gill Needs: 390 more runs

  Gill’s current tally: 585

  Bradman’s score after 2 Tests: 394

Interestingly, Shubman Gill has a handsome start in comparison with Bradman at this point of the series.

  1. Most Test Centuries in a Series

The most centuries in a single Test series record is five, held by Clyde Walcott (West Indies) against Australia in 1955. Walcott made three centuries in the first two Tests, much like Gill, and two centuries in the fifth Test.

 Gill Needs: 2 more centuries

Current count: 3 centuries in two Tests

The Indian record is once more held by Sunil Gavaskar, who made four tons in 1971 as well as 1978–79. Shubman Gill could break Indian and world records for most Test hundreds in one series if he persists with this purple patch.

  1. Fastest to 1000 Test Runs as Captain

Shubman Gill is chasing another Bradman record — quickest to 1000 Test runs as captain. Bradman achieved the mark in 11 innings.

 Gill Needs: 415 runs more

  Innings left: Up to 6

Indian Record: Sunil Gavaskar  14 innings

Gill has a good chance to beat both Bradman and Gavaskar if he continues in the same manner.

  1. Most Runs in a Series Against England

The Indian record for the most runs against England in a series is held by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who accumulated 712 runs in the 2024 home series.

Gill Needs: 127 more runs to break Jaiswal’s record

Dravid’s England Record: 602 runs in 2002 (Gill is only 18 runs behind)

Among Indian captains, Virat Kohli has the maximum 655 runs in the home series of 2016. Gill trails by only 91 runs.

A Historic Series in the Making for Shubman Gill

With three Tests yet to play, Shubman Gill is about to make a record run. From pursuing legendary records set by Don Bradman, Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli, and Clyde Walcott, to becoming arguably India’s highest-scoring Test captain in a series, Gill’s performances at MLC 2025 might redefine Indian Test cricket in the modern era.
