On Friday, May 23, West Indies player Matthew Forde matched the record for the fastest fifty in a One Day International (ODI) match. He did this during the second ODI against Ireland in Dublin.
Matthew Forde’s Record-Breaking Fifty Against Ireland
Matthew Forde, who mainly bowls fast, scored his fifty runs in only 16 balls. His quick batting included two fours and eight sixes. In total, he made 58 runs from 19 balls, with 56 of those runs coming from boundaries.
This was also Matthew Forde’s first fifty in international cricket, and he made it in a fantastic way. He matched the record held by the famous AB de Villiers, who scored a fifty in 16 balls. De Villiers set this record against the West Indies back in 2015.
Fastest ODI half-centuries
AB de Villiers – 16 balls
Matthew Forde – 16 balls
Sanath Jayasuriya – 17 balls
Kusal Perera – 17 balls
Martin Guptill – 17 balls
Liam Livingstone – 17 balls
Keacy Carty scored a century and Matthew Forde delivered a rapid fifty as West Indies posted a strong total of 352 for 8 in their 50 overs. The innings got off to a shaky start with early dismissals of Brandon King (8) and Evin Lewis (20).
Captain Shai Hope and Carty steadied the innings with an 81-run partnership for the third wicket. Hope was eventually dismissed for 49 by Liam McCarthy, but Carty went on to make his second ODI hundred, scoring 102 off 109 balls before falling to the same bowler.
After Carty’s wicket, West Indies lost a few more quickly and found themselves struggling at 213 for 5 in the 37th over, with a total above 300 looking unlikely. However, the lower order fought back well. Along with Forde’s quick runs, Justin Greaves scored an unbeaten 44, and Roston Chase contributed 24. Gudakesh Motie added a brisk 18 off 8 balls towards the end.
For Ireland, Liam McCarthy was the leading wicket-taker with 3, while Joshua Little and Barry McCarthy claimed 2 wickets each.
