Veteran all-rounder Chris Woakes has been picked in the England Lions squad for two upcoming four-day matches against India A. These games will help players from both sides get ready for the five-match Test series between India and England.
Chris Woakes Returns for England Lions
The BCCI recently announced the India A squad for three red-ball games in England. After playing two matches against the England Lions, India A will take on the senior Indian men’s team in a practice match.
Abhimanyu Easwaran will captain the India A side, which includes several familiar Test players like Shubman Gill, Nitish Reddy, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sarfaraz Khan.
England Lions have announced a 14-member squad for the two matches against India A. Somerset’s James Rew will captain the team.
Chris Woakes, recently left out of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe, is included and could return against India. He hasn’t played since January due to an ankle injury from the SA20 league.
Flintoff Legacy Continues with Rocky’s Inclusion
The squad also includes Rocky Flintoff, son of former England star Andrew Flintoff. Rehan Ahmed and his brother Farhan have both been picked, marking the first time they’re in the same England squad. Rehan will only play the first match before joining England’s T20I squad for the West Indies series.
“This series against a strong India A side is a huge opportunity for an exciting and highly talented group of players. It will provide an opportunity both individually and collectively to excel on the international stage as we continue to succession plan for England’s future needs,” said Ed Barney, ECB Performance Director for Men’s Cricket.
The first match will be held at the Spitfire Ground, Canterbury from May 30. The second will be at the County Ground, Northampton from June 6.
