Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakaravarthy found himself in trouble during the IPL 2025 match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The leg-spinner was given one demerit point and had to pay 25% of his match fee after giving a sharp send-off to CSK’s young batter Dewald Brevis.
What Happened During the Match?
The incident happened in the 13th over when KKR badly needed a breakthrough. Captain Ajinkya Rahane brought Chakaravarthy into the attack. And it worked instantly. On his very first ball, the spinner dismissed Brevis, who had earlier hit 30 runs in one over off Vaibhav Arora. As soon as Brevis got out, Varun made a pointed gesture towards him something that didn’t go well with the match officials.
Varun accepted his mistake under Level 1 of Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct. Since he agreed with the match referee’s decision, there was no need for a formal hearing.
Strong Bowling but a Heartbreaking Result
Even though Chakaravarthy bowled very well, finishing with 2 wickets for 18 runs in 4 overs, KKR couldn’t grab the win. CSK chased down the target of 180 runs in the final over and won the match with just two balls to spare.
KKR batted first and scored 179/6. Skipper Rahane played a key knock of 48 runs from 33 balls, while Andre Russell (38) and Manish Pandey (36) added good support. The start with the ball was promising as KKR dismissed Ayush Mhatre and Devon Conway for ducks.
But CSK bounced back. Urvil Patel smashed a quick 31 from 11 balls. Later, Shivam Dube and Dewald Brevis stitched a strong 77-run partnership that helped CSK regain control.
In the final moments, Anshul Kamboj sealed the win with MS Dhoni at the other end. This was CSK’s third win in IPL 2025. But for KKR, the loss came as a major blow to their playoff hopes.
