IPL 2025: MI, GT Fined After Rain-Hit Clash

The rain-soaked MI vs GT IPL 2025 match ended with fines for Ashish Nehra and Hardik Pandya! Discover why the GT coach and MI captain were penalised after the thrilling finish at Wankhede.

The rain-hit match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Gujarat Titans (GT) at Wankhede Stadium on May 6 ended with not just a dramatic finish, but also fines for both teams. GT coach Ashish Nehra and MI captain Hardik Pandya were both pulled up for separate reasons after the intense IPL 2025 clash.

Ashish Nehra Gets Penalised for Aggressive Behaviour

GT head coach Ashish Nehra was fined for behaviour that the IPL considered “against the spirit of the game.” During the final moments of the rain-interrupted match, Nehra appeared very animated. He seemed to be urging the umpires to restart play after the latest rain delay. His actions didn’t sit well with officials.

As a result, Nehra was fined 25% of his match fee and was also given one demerit point for breaking Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct. While the IPL didn’t explain what exactly he did wrong, this is only the second time a coach has received a demerit point this season. The first was Munaf Patel from Delhi Capitals, after their Super Over win against Rajasthan Royals.

MI Team Fined for Slow Over-Rate

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians were penalised for a slow over-rate during GT’s chase. Because of the delay, they were forced to keep an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle in the final over — which is the standard in-game punishment under IPL rules.

Hardik Pandya, who is MI’s captain, was fined ₹24 lakh since this was his team’s second slow over-rate offence of the season. The rest of the playing XI and the impact substitute, Karn Sharma, were each fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever was lower.

What Happened in the Match?

The match itself was filled with rain interruptions. Play stopped and resumed several times. GT needed 15 runs off the last over, bowled by Deepak Chahar. It went down to the final ball, and GT just managed to cross the line. The finish was chaotic and had everyone on edge.
