Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has made a big change in their team for the IPL 2025 season. They have added 17-year-old batsman Ayush Mhatre to their squad. He has joined the team because regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured. Gaikwad suffered a serious elbow injury and is out of the tournament.
CSK signed Ayush Mhatre for ₹30 lakh. After Gaikwad’s injury, MS Dhoni is now leading the team. Under his captaincy, CSK recently won their second match of the season against Lucknow Super Giants.

So far in IPL 2025, Chennai Super Kings have played 7 matches and won only 2. Right now, they are at the bottom of the points table — 10th place — with just 4 points. The team is expecting support from new players to come back stronger.
Who is Ayush Mhatre?
Ayush Mhatre is from Mumbai and plays for the Mumbai team in domestic cricket. He is a right-handed batsman and also bowls off-spin sometimes. At the age of just 17 years, he has performed well in domestic matches.
He has played 9 First-Class matches and scored 504 runs, including 2 centuries and 1 half-century. In List-A matches, he has scored 458 runs in 7 games, with an average of 65.42.

How did he join CSK?
Ayush was not bought by any team in the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah. But he got CSK’s attention during mid-season trials held in Chennai. At that time, he was at the BCCI Under-19 zonal camp in Rajkot. He flew to Chennai for the trials.
Strong performance in domestic tournaments
Ayush Mhatre played really well in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25. He scored the most runs for Mumbai — 458 runs. He also hit a big score of 181 against Nagaland, which was the highest individual score in the tournament. As a bowler, he took 7 wickets in 4 matches.
In the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season, he again did well with the bat and made 471 runs in 14 innings. His top score was 176.
