In a huge blow before their pivotal encounter against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 12, Gujarat Titans (GT) officially announced that Glenn Phillips has been ruled out of IPL 2025 because of a groin injury. The New Zealand all-rounder picked up the injury in GT’s game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6.
Glenn Phillips Ruled Out Of IPL 2025 Without Playing a Game
Though a great signing in the IPL 2025 mega auction at his base price of Rs 2 crore, Phillips never played a single game for GT this season. He is famous for his aggressive batting and world-class fielding, and his unavailability will be an immense setback for the team in terms of both balance and bench strength.
The franchise issued a statement, stating: “Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a speedy recovery.”
Replacement Headache for Gujarat Titans
Replacing Phillips will be a challenging task for the management of the Titans. The majority of good overseas players are already committed to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, and GT will have limited options.
But possible alternatives such as Jonny Bairstow and Dewald Brevis can be considered. The team will be seeking an individual to occupy the middle-order position and make a contribution with the bat and in the field.
Overseas Player Crisis for GT

Gujarat Titans have already been dealing with a lean overseas player group. South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has just departed for personal reasons. GT currently has only five overseas players available:
Jos Buttler
Sherfane Rutherford
Gerald Coetzee
Karim Janat
Rashid Khan
Both Coetzee and Janat have not yet received game time. In their previous three games, the Titans have only used three overseas players.
GT’s Strong Start Despite Setbacks
Despite injury setbacks, GT has been at the top of their game. They are presently at the top of the IPL 2025 points table, with four victories in five games. Their higher net run rate (NRR) puts them ahead of the unbeaten Delhi Capitals (DC).
Sherfane Rutherford, preferred over Phillips, has impressed with his hard-hitting middle-order performances. The West Indian has made 136 runs at a strike rate of 178.94 in five games, being a key contributor to GT’s early success.
