Harry Brook Has Been Named England’s New Captain For ODIs And T20Is

Young England batter Harry Brook has been appointed as the new captain for the team’s white-ball formats, taking over from Jos Buttler, who stepped down after England’s poor performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Brook made his England debut in a T20I against West Indies in January 2022 and has since played 26 ODIs and 44 T20Is.

Harry Brook Appointed England’s New White-Ball Captain

Earlier this year, Harry Brook was appointed as England’s white-ball vice-captain for the tour of India and also captained the team during the ODI series against Australia in September 2024, although his captaincy started with a 2-3 series defeat. Brook had previously led the England team in the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me,” said Brook in a media release.

He also thanked his family and coaches and said his aim is to help his team win big tournaments.

“I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them. There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events,” he added.

Brook’s first series as England’s full-time white-ball captain will be against West Indies, starting May 29, with three ODIs and three T20Is. Meanwhile, Brook decided to withdraw from IPL 2025 to focus on England’s home season. As a result, he has been banned from the IPL for two years under the new rules.
