Rob Walter has resigned from his position as South Africa’s white-ball head coach, and his resignation will take effect on April 30, 2025, Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed on Tuesday (April 1).
CSA said Rob Walter decided to leave his role as South Africa’s head coach for personal reasons, and they have accepted his resignation. Walter has been the coach of the South African T20I and ODI teams since March 2023. During his time as coach, South Africa had some strong performances in ICC tournaments.
Key Achievements Under Rob Walter’s Leadership
Under his leadership, South Africa reached the semifinals of the 2023 World Cup but lost to Australia, who went on to win the tournament. In 2024, they made it to the T20 World Cup final for the first time but lost to India in the final.
More recently, South Africa reached the semifinals of the ICC Champions Trophy, where they were eliminated by New Zealand. The Champions Trophy was his final tournament as the Proteas coach.
During Rob Walter’s time as head coach, South Africa played 36 ODIs and 31 T20Is. Under his leadership, the team won a series against countries like the Netherlands, Australia, Ireland, and Pakistan.
“Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,” said Rob Walter.
“The players, support staff, and the South African cricketing community have been fantastic throughout this journey. While it’s time for me to step away, I have no doubt that the team will continue to grow and reach even greater heights,” he added.
Director of National Teams and High-Performance Enoch Nkwe said: “Rob has done an immense job for South African cricket over the past two years.
“It is also important to recognise Rob’s commitment to expanding the talent pool across both formats. While in charge, he ensured that emerging players had the opportunity to develop and make their mark at the highest level, which will be critical for the future of the Proteas.
“We have a busy period of white-ball cricket over the next two years as we build towards the Cricket World Cup on home soil. His successor will continue to work towards that 50-over World Cup campaign, along with next year’s T20 World Cup,” added Nkwe.
CSA’s Search for a New Head Coach for the Proteas
CSA will announce a new head coach for South Africa’s white-ball teams soon. The Proteas’ next white-ball series will be in July when they travel to Zimbabwe for a T20I tri-series with New Zealand and Zimbabwe.
After that, they will tour Australia to play three T20Is and three ODIs. Following the Australia tour, South Africa will visit England for three ODIs and three T20Is.
