IPL 2025: Change in over-rate rules, suspension of captains put on hold
BCCI’s new decision
The BCCI has taken a big step by changing the rules of slow over rate (over-rate) for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. As per the new rules, captains will no longer be suspended for over-rate violations. Earlier, captains were suspended for one match for committing three consecutive over-rate offences, but now this rule has been changed.
Effect of new rules
From this season, the suspension of captains will be replaced by punishment options such as fines and bans during the game. However, the suspension orders imposed before IPL 2025 will remain in force. This new change means that Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya will be out of the first match. He faced a suspension due to repeated slow over rate last season, which will continue till the first match of this season.
Provision of new demerit point system
The BCCI has introduced a demerit point system in the IPL, which is in line with the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Code of Conduct. Under this system, over-rate violations will result in a fine being imposed on a captain or team and demerit points will be awarded in return.
Each over-rate violation will attract a fine of 25% of the match fee, which will be added as demerit points. This rule applies to both players and team officials and these points will remain on their records for 36 months. If enough demerit points are accumulated against a player or official, they may face suspension.
Right to appeal and fees
If a player, official or franchise objects to a punishment, they can appeal to the BCCI Ombudsman. Appeals for Level 2 or 3 offences will require an appeal fee of Rs 90 lakh, which will be refunded only if the appeal is successful.
IPL 2025 kicks off
The opening match of IPL 2025 will take place on Saturday, March 22, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata.
