SA vs NZ: In the second semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, New Zealand batted brilliantly to stun South Africa with a gigantic total of 363 runs. Thanks to ton-plus contributions from Ravindra and Williamson, the Kiwis created history by registering the highest-ever total in the Champions Trophy.
New Zealand’s explosive innings and record-breaking total

New Zealand, who were sent in to bat first after winning the toss at the Gaddafi Cricket Stadium in Lahore, made full use of the conditions on offer, scoring a mammoth 362/6 in 50 overs.
This total sets a new record for the Champions Trophy, eclipsing the previous highest of 356 runs scored by another team in the tournament’s history. Now, standing in the way of South Africa after that, a final ticket must be pursued at all cost in what is a real mountain of 363 runs.
Rachin Ravindra’s Explosive Century

Starting on the attack with poise and confidence, Rachin Ravindra breezed his way to an exhilarating 108 off just 92 balls, with 13 fours and a six, providing a solid platform from which New Zealand could launch.
It was Ravindra’s third ODI century, and this was the fifth time, and notably the second time in this very tournament, that he crossed the three-figure mark. His aggression and neat gap-finding ensured that New Zealand were on a roll right from the start.
Kane Williamson’s Masterclass and Milestone

With Ravindra, a century came for Kane Williamson, and the way he constructed that must have further confirmed him as one of the most reliable batsmen around in international cricket.
The 15th ODI ton for Williamson built the pillars for the innings, with his graceful stroke play shining through. But it was not only a century from Williamson that happened during the match; he also reached a personal milestone.
His contribution helped him go past the 19,000-run mark in international cricket, joining a select company with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Virat Kohli, Ricky Ponting, and Joe Root.
South Africa’s Bowling Struggles
South Africa’s bowling attack could not have much of an impact on the game, being unable to cope with New Zealand’s strong batting order. The Gaddafi Cricket Stadium conditions were not helpful at all, and the Proteas’ bowling team was unable to implement their strategies well.
Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers, picking up 3 wickets for 72 runs in 10 overs. Kagiso Rabada picked up 2 wickets, while Wiaan Mulder picked up 1 wicket. The rest of the bowling attack, however, could not keep New Zealand’s scoring in check, compounded by some missed chances in the field which further added to South Africa’s misery.
A Hill to Die for South Africa
With a record target of 363 runs to be chased in 50 overs, South Africa has a mountain to climb to make it to the final of the Champions Trophy. The pressure is so high, and they would require a special batting effort to achieve what would be one of the great chases in tournament history.
While the second innings of cricket unfolds, fans worldwide await with bated breath to see if South Africa can pull off a record chase or if New Zealand stroll into the final with their powerful performance.
