The International Cricket Council (ICC) suffered losses of around USD 20 million for hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA, reportedly. On Monday, the ICC put USA Cricket on notice for ‘non-compliance’ in one of the major decisions taken at its Annual General Meeting in Colombo.
For the unversed, the International Cricket Council conducted a probe into the T20 World Cup because of alleged overshooting of budges, especially in the USA leg of the tournament.
ICC Issues Warning To USA Cricket For Non-Compliance
At the Annual Conference, which lasted for four days and concluded with the AGM on Monday, the International Cricket Council also decided to review the delivery of the T20 World Cup 2024.
“The ICC Board confirmed that there will be a review into the delivery of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. This will be overseen by three directors, Roger Twose, Lawson Naidoo and Imran Khwaja who will report back to the Board later in the year,” read a statement from the International Cricket Council.
The USA and Chile will have 12 months to rectify their actions, overseen by a “Normalisation Committee” appointed by the global governing body. Failure to comply after being warned will result in suspension.
“USA Cricket and Cricket Chile have been formally put on notice and have 12 months to rectify their current non-compliance with the ICC Membership Criteria. Neither Member is considered to have in place a fit-for-purpose detailed governance and administrative structure and systems.”
The ICC added: “The ICC Americas office will work with Cricket Chile to support them in remedying their non-compliance. The Board agreed that a Normalisation Committee comprising of Board and Management representatives will be set up to oversee and monitor USA Cricket’s compliance roadmap and the ICC Board will reserve its right to suspend or expel the Member for continued non-compliance,”
Top teams from the United States and the West Indies co-hosted the T20 World Cup in June. There were matches in Florida, Dallas, and New York. But hosting world-class cricket at these locations wasn’t without its difficulties.
Its unpredictable bounce and uneven bounce caused low-scoring matches, while the wicket in New York, which was prepared in Florida and placed only before the competition, drew criticism.
