Shreyas Iyer Reaps Rich Rewards With His Consistency For Team India

Mumbai batter has been in top form in 2022. Can he become a regular member?

Shreyas Iyer performed outstandingly in the recently concluded ODI series against South Africa. Iyer scored 50, 113 not out and 28 not out to finish as the top run scorer. The 27-year-old batted at number 4 and scored well in all three games he played in the series. However, Iyer could not win the Player Of the Series Award, as it went to an Indian pacer, Mohammed Siraj who did a great job in bowling.

Iyer had a wonderful 2022. He was the player of the match on 5 games out of 16 that he played in this year, across the formats. The Mumbai cricketer got many chances after India rested some key players. However, it calls for concern that he is not on A list of players.ย

Shreyas Iyer makes a grand comeback

The talented cricketer was once touted as the mainstay of Indian middle-order batting. However, following a serious injury, he lost his regular place on the team. The Delhi Capitals, which he used to lead in the past, had also replaced him with Rishabh Pant, as the regular skipper. Slowly, Iyer lost his spot and went unremembered for a brief span.

It was a dramatic fall, as he was once touted as the future leader of Indian cricket. However, a hard-working Iyer did not stop himself. He trained hard and waited for his opportunities. As per stats, the Mumbai cricketer made the best of his chances this year.ย

Iyer debuted in Tests and scored a century on debut. However, he still isnโ€™t a regular member in any of the formats in which he is appearing. Iyer may get more chances in ODIs after the ICC World Cup in 2023, as some of the top stars will retire after the top event.

What Iyer needs to work on?

Shreyas has the ability to bat responsibly and play long innings for the team. However, he needs to reinvent his ability to deal with short-pitched balls. Of late, he is troubled by many bowlers, with a well-set bouncer plan, and he has fallen trap to it, on bouncy wickets.

Meanwhile, Shreyas’s strength lies in handling spin bowling with ease, something many Indian batters miss at present. Iyer will look to cement his position in the team, and keep scoring runs, to become an all-format regular player.
