Can India’s Record Bilateral Domination Translate Into The World Cup?

India did not lose any T20 series they played this year. But what about ICC events?

India has now won ten bilateral series under their skipper, Rohit Sharma. The Men In Blue did not lose a T20I series this year. They have become one of the most feared oppositions of their aggressive approach. However, the fans aren’t happy, and some players aren’t too. It is because of a dubious record. It’s been nearly a decade since India last won an ICC event.

The last time India won an ICC tournament was in 2013, in England under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. After this triumph, the team did not g kissed the cup again. They made it to the finals in the 2014 T20 World Cup, where they lost to Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue hosted the World Cup in 2016 and looked set for a cup, before losing to the Windies in the semis. In 2021, India was knocked out of the Super 12, after two defeats against New Zealand and Pakistan.

India in the Asia Cup 2022

India walked into the 2022 Asia Cup as the tournament favourites. They started off with two impressive wins in the league stage. However, they suffered two defeats in the Super Four stage and it knocked them out before the final. The previous year’s champions lost the plot, as bowlers went aplenty in both games.

However, the team bounced back in the series against Australia. India won the series 2-1 and followed suit against South Africa. It completed tremendous domination by the team in the bilateral series. Team India has one of the best records under captain Rohit Sharma.

Can Men in Blue win the T20 World Cup?

India has the strength and the firepower to keep the opposition at bay. However, they succumb to pressure in ICC events and have a lot more areas for improvement. Sometimes, they peak early and lose momentum when the tournament reaches the crucial stage. This happened in the 2019 ICC World Cup where they missed the plot in the latter half of the Super ten and semifinal against New Zealand.

Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma deserve many credits for the dominant Indian T20 side, which plays an aggressive brand of cricket. But they need to ensure they do not falter on the big stage as they head into the ICC T20 World Cup 2022
