Australia’s young batsman, Oliver Peake, described the team’s narrow one-wicket victory over Pakistan in the U19 Men’s World Cup semi-final as the “best game” of his life. This thrilling win secured Australia’s spot in the title clash against defending champions India on Sunday. Peake, at just 17, played a pivotal role, scoring a crucial 49 from 75 balls after stepping in as a replacement for Corey Wasley, who suffered a finger injury mid-tournament.
Reflecting on the dramatic turn of events, Peake, a Year 12 student at Geelong Grammar School, expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s hard to describe, from coming two weeks ago as a replacement to playing in a semi-final, it is a pretty dramatic change in events so I was pretty happy.”
Peake acknowledged the support and camaraderie within the team, highlighting how the senior players welcomed him, making his transition smooth. Being the youngest player in the Australia U19 side, Peake’s performance in the semi-final showcased his talent and composure under pressure.

The young batter also shared insights into his unexpected call-up to the team and the influence of his father, Clinton, who captained the Australia U19 side in 1994-95. “Dad’s been a massive influence on me. The mindset of the game and preparing me for high levels of cricket from a young age,” said Peake, acknowledging his father’s role in shaping his cricketing journey.
Australia’s last U19 World Cup victory was in 2010, and Peake believes the team’s optimistic culture has been instrumental in their impressive run. “I think the culture around the group is so good, everyone is used to winning around here so that’s why there’s no excuses to lose really,” he stated. The positive mindset and focus on self-improvement, rather than worrying about the opposition, have contributed to Australia’s success in the tournament.
