After a successful launch season of the Indian Premier League in 2008 this year IPL has shifted to South Africa for some security reasons due to general elections in India. Now along with India, the South African crowd was also excited for this tournament. The 2008 IPL was a blockbuster, so even though the venue has shifted to another country, the hype has gone to another level in India.
Because this IPL was in South Africa, everyone knows that this edition is going to be remembered for a long time. Deccan Chargers a team that ended at the tenth position last year has surprisingly won the tournament without having any big names in it. Pakistani players have been executed from the IPL after only one season due to some security reasons after a massive terrorist attack in Mumbai. 200 million people in India viewed this IPL on television which was also a record. Before going to IPL 2024 let’s recap the Story of IPL.
Teams and Captains
The format and team were as same as it was in 2008. The Auction of this season was held on 6 February 2009 in Goa and there were 43 players from 9 countries were allowed to participate. There were only 17 players for whom teams went and others left unnoticed. Some of the biggest names from these 17 players were Kevin Pietersen (RCB), Andrew Flintoff(CSK), Shaun Tait(RR), etc. Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff were the most expensive players in the Indian Premier League at that time. Some of the big names who left unsold were Brad Haddin, Steve Smith, Shakib Al Hasan, etc.
This year the number of foreign players in each squad had increased from 8 to 10. Some of the teams have changed captains for the new season and handed over the leadership to foreign players.
Teams | Captains |
Chennai Super Kings | Mahendra Singh Dhoni |
Mumbai Indians | Sachin Tendulkar |
Delhi Daredevils | Virendra Sehwag |
Rajasthan Royals | Shane Warne |
Kolkata Knight Riders | Brandon McCullum |
Royal Challengers Banglore | Kevin Pietersen |

Kings XI Punjab | Yuvraj Singh |
Group Stage and Points Table
PS | Teams | Matches | Win | Lost | NR | Points |
1 | Delhi Daredevils | 14 | 10 | 4 | 0 | 20 |
2 | Chennai Super Kings | 14 | 8 | 5 | 1 | 17 |
3 | Royal Challengers Banglore | 14 | 8 | 6 | 0 | 16 |
4 | Deccan Chargers | 14 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 14 |
5 | Kings XI Punjab | 14 | 7 | 7 | 0 | 14 |
6 | Rajasthan Royals | 14 | 6 | 7 | 1 | 13 |
7 | Mumbai Indians | 14 | 5 | 8 | 1 | 11 |
8 | Kolkata Knight Riders | 14 | 3 | 10 | 1 | 7 |
The top two teams in the points table were CSK and DD but the last two teams in the top four were the teams who were in the seventh and eighth positions last year. Deccan Chargers have unexpectedly managed into the top four due to a better run rate than Kings XI Punjab. League matches have so much drama that the last becomes the qualifier for the fourth position. Sachin Tendulkar’s MI was unable to qualify again for the second time and changing the captain didn’t help KKR to qualify for the second time in a row.
Final
Surprisingly the top two teams who were supposed to reach the finals were knocked out in playoffs by RCB and DC. Both new teams have reached the finals from the last year so it was clear that IPL is going to have a new Champion this year.
The Final was played on 24 May 2009 at Johannesburg. After being invited to bat by RCB Deccan Chargers had set the target of 144 in front of Anil Kumble’s team. Herschelle Gibbs(53*) was the highest scorer for DC and captain Anil Kumble leading the bowling lineup of RCB took four wickets and didn’t allow DC to score big. In reply, DC didn’t allow RCB to cement their foot in the ground and kept taking wickets occasionally. In the end, RCB lost the game by 6 runs, and by defending a low score Deccan Chargers became the champion of the Indian Premier League 2009.
