Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly expressed his desire for Pakistan to qualify for the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 semi-finals and face India in what he believes would be an unparalleled clash. India secured their spot in the semi-finals by defeating Sri Lanka and dominating South Africa, finishing at the top of the points table with eight consecutive wins.
Ganguly, in an interview with Sports Tak, stated, “I want Pakistan to reach the semi-finals and play India. It can’t be a bigger semi-final than that.” The battle for the fourth position intensifies after Australia’s thrilling victory against Afghanistan. Pakistan, vying for a semi-final berth, needs a substantial win against England, coupled with New Zealand losing or their match getting washed out against Sri Lanka.

The venue and date of India’s semi-final would hinge on the opponent. If it’s against New Zealand or Afghanistan, the match will be at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15. However, if Pakistan qualifies, the semi-final will take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on November 16—a significant reason for Ganguly’s desire for an India vs. Pakistan blockbuster.
Ganguly, cautious not to jinx India’s chances, acknowledged the team’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament. He stated, “No, it won’t be a shock (if this Indian team doesn’t win the World Cup). It doesn’t happen in sports like that.” Despite the nation’s delight with India’s stellar play, Ganguly emphasized the need for the team to maintain their high level of performance.
In the race for the semi-finals, New Zealand holds a slight advantage over Afghanistan and Pakistan due to their higher net run rate. Ganguly highlighted that a win for New Zealand against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru would confirm their spot, while Pakistan needs a decisive victory over England, and Afghanistan requires a 140-run win against South Africa to advance.
