During the current ODI World Cup, India and Pakistan engaged in combat at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Having won the toss, Rohit Sharma chose to bowl. Pakistan scored 191 runs in the first innings. Here is a recap of the first innings.

Pakistan has a steady start

Pakistan got off to a strong start despite recently having a fragile top order. As Abdullah Shafique hit a boundary on the final ball of the over, Jasprit Bumrah only allowed four runs to be scored in the first over. Imam-ul-Haq crushed Mohammed Siraj for four boundaries as a result of his bad start and some overpitch deliveries. From the other end, Bumrah bowled another calm over, which resulted in just one run. Pakistan appeared to be in complete control heading into the World Cup after scoring 37 runs in the first seven overs. On the final delivery of the eighth over, Siraj trapped Shafique before the wicket, giving India their first wicket of the game. Shafique struck three fours and scored 20 runs in 24 balls. Bumrah was replaced at the other end by Hardik Pandya, who gave up 18 runs in his first two overs. Pakistan scored 49 runs in the first 10 overs while only losing one wicket.

India controls middle overs

Imam delivered a back-foot drive for Pakistan’s opener, forcing Pandya to induce the outside edge from his bat, and KL Rahul dismissed the left-handed batter by diving and making a low catch. Mohammad Rizwan was ruled out LBW in the next over, but a review determined that the ball had missed the stumps, saving him. Pakistan scored 103 runs at the cost of two wickets after 20 overs. Babar avoided being declared leg before wicket in the 25th over. India requested a review, however, the decision about Babar’s survival was made by the umpire and India was able to keep the review. In the 29th over, Babar reached his half-century in 57 balls and appeared to be in great shape for a big score. In the subsequent over, Siraj rejected the half-centurion, giving India a much-needed victory. The 82-run partnership between Pakistan’s top hitters was broken by Siraj. Pakistan scored 156 runs for the cost of three wickets after 30 overs.

In his ninth over, Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets, putting Pakistan’s batting order in jeopardy. After a successful review by Rohit for LBW overturned on-field umpire Marais Erasmus’ call, Kuldeep dismissed Saud Shakeel. Iftikhar Ahmed converted a routine leg-side delivery into a wicket-taking delivery in the same over as the ball hit his gloves and headed towards the stumps.

When Bumrah returned to the attack, the renowned Indian pacer struck out the designated batsman, Rizwan. In 69 balls, Rizwan scored 49 runs while hitting seven fours. In his subsequent over, Bumrah dismissed Shadab Khan, giving India complete control of the game.
