Watching five time world cup winner Australia performing unexpectedly weak in this tournament seems like something wrong with this team. Aussies have never lost their first two games since the ‘92’ world cup. No doubt Australia is a strong team on paper but they have to admit that they have performed very disappointingly in this tournament so far. Australians were so weak in almost every field. In the last game against South Africa, Australian batters played very diplomatically and lost the game by 134 runs while chasing 312 runs. Before that they looked so lazy in the field and dropped many catches. There are many reasons to point out Australia’s performance but here let’s talk about 3 of them which are the basic sections in which Australia’s surprised everyone.
Fielding
Australians are considered as one of best fielders in the world but the way they’ve been into the field in the last two games is just unbelievable, they’ve dropped 7 catches against Bangladesh which pushed Australians on the backfoot and helped South Africans to gain confidence.
Some catches were hard but some were so simple that a kid could even catch those balls.
Misfielding has been done often by Australians in both games which made them lose confidence and slip into a shell. Australia has to look up for their fielding effort in next games to make a comeback.
Batting
Australia is facing failure of top order where Mitchell Marsh and David Warner are unable to give a good start to the inning which could help middle order batters to further run the game and then lower order can accelerate the inning at the end. In middle order Labushane is just playing anonymous, and Josh English is contributing just as a wicket-keeper. Maxwell is looking more bowler than a batter and watching Stoinis is like he is only filling a place of two players.
Only Steve smith is looking dedicated while batting but he also couldn’t carry forward the game when wickets are continuously falling from the other side.
Australia needs to make changes in their batting order, Warner and Mitchell Marsh have to give a good start to the top.
Player’s current form
Not a single Australian player is looking like he can single handedly change the game and that is the big problem for the team. David Warner was looking good before the world cup where he made three consecutive half centuries against India but in the world cup he’s struggling to score runs. Steve smith is also unable to convert his good start into big innings. Australian bowlers are performing decently. Maxwell is taking wickets at the middle and Josh Hazelwood is bothering batters at the top. Mitchell Starc appears helpless if any batsman starts hitting him boundaries.
We know that Australia is a champion team and they are going to make a strong comeback and we hope that Australia will return to its old form and start giving strong competition and make this world cup more interesting.
