ODI World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson eager to play against Bangladesh

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson expresses his excitement at returning to the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup after recovering from an ACL injury.

New Zealand’s captain, Kane Williamson, is eagerly looking forward to making his first appearance in the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup during Friday’s match against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. This anticipated return comes after his successful recovery from an ACL injury in his right knee.

Williamson’s participation in the tournament was in doubt after he suffered an ACL rupture in his right knee while fielding in the opening match of IPL 2023 for Gujarat Titans in March. He had to undergo surgery upon his return to New Zealand.

While he missed New Zealand’s games against England and the Netherlands, Williamson is now prepared to rejoin international cricket against Bangladesh.

Reflecting on his recovery journey, Williamson shared, “My recovery has been a journey marked by significant progress. I’m truly excited to be included in the World Cup squad and to be here now, looking forward to tomorrow’s big challenge. It’s a new venue, new opposition, as is often the case in global events and we’re ready for the challenge.” Discussing the process of his rehabilitation, he noted, “The journey began with a series of small steps, primarily focused on building strength and improving knee range. As the load increased, we worked on controlling any associated discomfort. The details could go on for quite some time.”

He continued, “I fast forward a bit and it was great to participate in the enjoyable warm-up games and engage in post-match fitness routines, especially related to fielding and the time spent on my feet, while focusing on executing specific skills.”

Comparing his knee injury to his elbow injury

Williamson also acknowledged the contrasting nature of his recovery from a long-standing elbow issue during the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. When asked about the difference in the recoveries from both injuries, he highlighted the crucial role that data played in his ongoing rehabilitation process.

“These injuries are quite different, but speaking specifically about this one, there were distinct milestones and steps to achieve during the recovery process. It involved various measurements, data from other sports, strength assessments and various performance metrics. It’s a different process, but I’m just grateful to be here now and eagerly anticipating the challenges tomorrow.”
