Eoin Morgan Advises Caution: “Naive” to Add Jofra Archer Midway in Men’s ODI WC

Former captain Eoin Morgan warns England about rushing Jofra Archer into the 2023 ICC World Cup, citing concerns over his fitness and readiness.

Former Captain Eoin Morgan Cautions Against Hasty Inclusion of Jofra Archer in Men’s ODI World Cup

Eoin Morgan, the former captain of the England cricket team, has offered a word of caution regarding the possible mid-tournament inclusion of Jofra Archer in the 2023 ICC World Cup. Morgan believes it would be “naive” for England to consider adding Archer, who has been sidelined due to injuries since May, to the lineup led by Jos Buttler.

Archer played a pivotal role in England’s victorious 2019 ODI World Cup campaign against New Zealand at Lord’s. His memorable Super Over and stellar performance as the team’s leading wicket-taker made him a key figure in that historic triumph. However, persistent fitness issues have limited Archer to just seven ODIs since that achievement, with his last competitive appearance dating back to the IPL in May.

Morgan expressed his reservations, stating, “It’s not something that I think would be a wise move. Archer hasn’t played any matches, and we can’t predict his current capabilities. Although reports from his training sessions with the team indicate he’s bowling exceptionally well, it’s essential to see him in a match situation. Given his recent injury concerns, it would be unwise to rush him back into action.”

Jofra Archer is set to join the England squad in Mumbai next week as the designated reserve player for the tournament. He participated in training sessions during England’s ODI series against New Zealand last month, showcasing his bowling prowess. Furthermore, Archer has been actively involved in bowling sessions as part of his rehabilitation at Hove.

Morgan also downplayed the likelihood of Archer returning to action soon, emphasizing the need for a significant injury within the squad. He commented, “For Archer to make an appearance, there would need to be a considerable injury, and we’re only in the first week of the tournament. It would have to be a six-week injury to one of our bowlers.”
