Sean Abbott Acknowledges Need for Improved Bowling Execution as Australia Suffers Fifth Consecutive ODI Defeat

Australian fast-bowling all-rounder Sean Abbott recognizes the need for better execution in the bowling department after Australia’s fifth consecutive ODI loss to India.

Sean Abbott, the versatile fast-bowling all-rounder from Australia, candidly admitted that the team’s bowling execution needs improvement following their fifth consecutive One Day International (ODI) loss. Australia faced a 99-run defeat against India by the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in the second ODI at the Holkar Stadium.

In this match, Australia had chosen to bowl first but found themselves conceding a formidable 399/5. Sean Abbott, in particular, gave away 91 runs, while Cameron Green also conceded over 100 runs. This disappointing performance continued a series of subpar bowling displays by Australia, as they had previously conceded 416, 338, and 315 runs in their last three matches against South Africa.

Abbott acknowledged the need for significant improvement in executing their bowling plans, especially in terms of targeting the stumps and maintaining consistent lengths. He expressed confidence in the team’s capabilities, stating, “We’re doing some right things moving into the World Cup, we just haven’t put them out there on the park yet so I’m confident we can turn that around pretty quickly.”

Despite the series loss, Abbott emphasized that there was no sense of panic in the dressing room. He also defended the team’s death bowling performance, despite conceding 103 runs in the last 10 overs.

Abbott voiced his concerns about Australia’s bowling during the first powerplay, where they struggled to contain Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, both of whom went on to score centuries. He noted, “It showed today when we were bowling, and it was a little bit the same in South Africa, every ball that missed the stumps was put away to the fence.”

He further added, “It’s not surprising … if you don’t execute like we did today, and last game, they’re just going to dine out, and we’re not putting them under much pressure. It’s disappointing, especially from my end.”

Abbott, known for his ability to maintain pressure with his bowling, expressed his determination to rectify his performance. He concluded by highlighting that the opposition batsmen have been quick to capitalize on any loose deliveries, making it essential for the bowlers to execute their plans effectively.
