Ravichandran Ashwin Backs Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul as India’s Strong No.4 and No.5 for Upcoming Tournaments

Ravichandran Ashwin expresses confidence in Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul as India’s ideal No.4 and No.5 for upcoming cricket tournaments, emphasizing their expertise and importance.

The perennial debate surrounding India’s middle-order in ODIs has seen cricket enthusiasts and experts alike pondering the ideal lineup. After the 2019 World Cup semi-final loss, the absence of a solid No.4 became glaring. Over the years, more than 10 players have been tested in that role, but the search for a perfect fit continued. Similarly, the No.5 position has been equally challenging. However, recent times have showcased a promising change with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul making their mark.

In the view of Ravichandran Ashwin, there’s no room for doubt when it comes to India’s No.4 and No.5 for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup, provided both Iyer and Rahul are in match-fit condition. Ashwin’s assertion stands strong, considering the impressive performances of Rahul and Iyer, making them standout contenders among the middle-order options tried by India since the last World Cup in 2019.

Ashwin went on to emphasize that KL Rahul’s transition to the No.5 slot, combined with his stellar performance as a wicketkeeper-batsman, has filled the void left by the retirements of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. Having accumulated 742 runs with an outstanding average of 53 and a strike rate of 99.33, Rahul’s adeptness in this role has stood out.

“With expertise, Rahul has seamlessly filled the slot left by Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni’s retirement. He is our wicketkeeper-batsman at No.5,” Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel.

Despite Rahul’s slight injury concern, Ashwin commended him for embracing the role of keeper-batter, especially after Rishabh Pant’s injury. Ashwin also highlighted Ishan Kishan as the second-choice keeper.

Shreyas Iyer’s significance mirrors that of KL Rahul. Iyer’s remarkable ability to tackle spin, backed by his solid record of 805 runs at an average of 47.35 and a strike rate of 94.37, makes him a strong contender for the No.4 spot. Additionally, his adaptability to various situations, whether absorbing pressure or capitalizing on a good start, adds to his value.

“Shreyas Iyer is equally vital to the team as KL Rahul. His performance against spin and his consistency at No.4 are commendable. If fully fit, there should be no doubt about his position,” Ashwin affirmed in reference to India’s Asia Cup squad.

While Ajit Agarkar, BCCI chairman of selectors, provided assurance about Iyer’s fitness, he mentioned a new niggle for Rahul, raising doubts about his availability for India’s Asia Cup opener against Pakistan. As Ashwin indicated, the fitness of Rahul and Iyer is paramount for India’s success in the upcoming tournaments, transcending their positions in the playing XI. Both players, if fit, are considered locks for No.4 and No.5 roles.
